Papillon Cafe - pleasant surprise

Was pleasantly surprised yesterday - Papillon Cafe in Northfield Ave deoes tasty food and pleasant coffee. Its near the junction of Elers Road/Northfied Ave - serves excellent lunches and was quite crowded yesterday - fresh croissants, tasty home-made quiches and grilled vegs, apple tart with cream, fresh scones etc. Not expensive either - well worth a try.

I agree, Gerry - Papillon is definitely a cut above. Most of the patisserie is freshly made and the coffee is decent. I would highly recommend the Croque Monsieur.

I second the vote for the Croque Monsieur - especially the salmon version yummmmm, well overdue a visit

Couldn't agree more. Have been going to Papillon since it opened a couple of years ago and it is by far the best cafe in Northfields. The owner, Abel, is friendly, an extremely talented chef and incredibly hard-working. The cafe deserves to do well (and seems to be given its popularity).It's exactly the kind of small business that everyone wants on their local high street and which we should all be doing our utmost to support.

Glad you enjoy Papillon - you're so right, its just the kinda cafe we need locally. Its so good, we had another lunch there, this time taking two neighbours - the chef is so enthusiastic and skilled(I think he's Bulgarian) - we had omelettes(mushrooms, cheese and ham) with their grilled corgettes and potatoes, followed by some of his home made cakes and coffees - a delightful lunch. It was packed almost to capacity - always a good sign.

Just goes to show that even with all the competition ( and on Northfields there's alot) and in these difficult, economic, times a buisness can succeed if they are good at what they do, are hardworking and professionel. well done them!

Glad you liked it Gerry.  A great cafe, but if he is to succeed long term he needs a strategy for the folk who use it as a gathering place, using tables for hours and not buying anything more than a coffee. Perhaps you can come up with some good humorous suggestions that wouldn't lose customers but would achieve reasonably fast turnover?
