Online survey by Ealing Council about Ealing Bdy station

I was handed a leaflet this morning at Ealing Broadway station requesting me to complete a short online survey at http://www.ealingbroadwaytravelsurvey.co.ukIt only takes a couple of minutes to complete, and seems (IMHO) to be directed at encouraging more cycling to Ealing Broadway station.

Petitions to Ealing Council

Don't think this has taken off yet. There have been only three petitions now closed and the number of signatories was pretty low.Just 256,7 and 24 persons signed the three petitions.Must do better. Clearly these activities need a lot more publicity in future. Perhaps the numbers required are too high?? £500+ SPENDING. Council from the top down mired in waste

Council spending detail over £500 is on webpage. http://www2.ealing.gov.uk/services/business/procurement/500/As the Chief Executive seems to be in the frame at the moment, and someone presumably has brought that to his attention, I had a look at the expenditure in Quarter two 2010. In that period the Excel sheet of invoices tells us that the total expenditure against his department was £299,294.83.Out of that total on Stationery Consumables and Printing his department spent £184,664.48.Obviously I cannot say if that was a lot or a little but what I can and do ask is why on earth does his department need to use 30 different contractors to provide this service for his department.Using 30 contractors for apparently just one department when the country is broke, is just shameful. When looking at the total expenditure for all departments for Stationery Consumables and Printing for this quarter the cost was £382,066.77, but this time there was a monstrous number of 75 different suppliers. Do 3,373 Council employees really need so many suppliers?Have they not heard of bulk buying discounts? Have they not heard of the economy of scale in dealing with just a small handful of contractors? And under the heading of sharing suppliers with other West London Alliance Councils has the Chief Executive considered the further discounts which would then also be available? Once we see his department starting to lead by example, then at the same time some of the massive invoices paid by some other departments need to be looked at to see where else bulk buying would reduce the annual Council spending.I think Minister Pickles would be interested in this example of poor management. To Councillor Phil Taylor: re South Ealing Road 'Improvements'

Councillor Taylor, you told us: "It is worth remembering that this scheme is funded by TfL so if we strip out all of the road safety aspects they will not fund it.  But, if we don’t want it we don’t have to have it". I have put this to the Council's Assistant Director of Strategic Transport, Nick O'Donnell, who is responsible for this scheme, and he advises: "To clarify on Councillor Taylor's comments, it is up to the Borough how we spend our allocation of money.  If we wish a corridor to include road safety measures or not has no bearing on the funding.  I trust this clarifies that point".So one of you is talking rubbish and misinforming us. Which one is it? - you or him? - does this scheme really depend on yet-to-be-secured funding from TfL, dependent on demonstrable accident and casualty eduction justification, as you forcefully claim, or has all the funding necessary already been secured and allocated, as Mr O'Donnell equally forcefully claims?Whichver, you can take it from me that this scheme as currently proposed has NO meaningful correlation with the actual accident record on thus corridor - which is remarkably good - having analysed in detail the three years' injury accident records on which the Council claims the scheme to be based, and checked the results against the actual scheme proposed, and there is NO accident-based justification for any of the works proposed.

Countdown - Bus time information.

Whilst I find the train times departure boards at our local rail and tube stations a useful facility via Ealing Today, I wonder if it might be possible to link in to the Countdown signs which are on many bus shelters? The ability see what time the next bus is due even 3 or 4 stops away would be most useful. Anyone have any knowledge?

Kitten wanted

Hi, my girls have been bugging me for a kitten for years and I've finally succumbed. Does anyone have a kitten we could have or buy? I am checking gumtree and have looked in the pet shop on Crown Street but they only have exotic ones at £350 each. I have had cats before so it would be going to an experienced home. Any help appreciated. Thank you.

dry cleaner in northfields or south ealing

Can anyone recommend a dry cleaner in this area for cleaning covers for two ikea sofas. Covers are white cotton. Prices seem to vary a lot from initial enquires. Has anyone had similar covers cleaned. Too big to fit a domestic washing machine but perhaps washing in a launderette would be better than dry cleaning. (label says can be washed at 40c )

Mammas and Pappas buggy for FREE

Hi, I have a mammas and Pappas pliko prammette to sell. You can use it either as a carry cot (where the baby lies flat) or a buggy. It has been WELL used so is by no means in perfect condition. Needs a bit of TLC. The handle bars do still adjust but one is a slightly different height due to carrying a trike across the handle bars! I'm being completely honest with the condition so as not to disillusion you! It is a lovely pram to use with baby but is heavy to push with a toddler  - hence why I'm swapping to a Maclaren. It comes with a rain cover, a foot apron, parasol, instructions and matching nappy bag. It is grey.  Please get in touch if you are interested, I live in Acton. WEN Public Meeting - Keep Calm and Carry On! - 2nd March

WEN public meeting - Keep Calm and Carry On - Wednesday 2nd March at St James Church (back of Sainsbury's) from 7.30pm  Keep Calm and Carry On is the theme of this years AGM which we're holding at St James Church, St James Avenue on Wednesday 2nd March starting 7.30pm.As the budget cuts bite, jobs are lost and everyone feels the pressure on their finances we have asked a range of local groups to come and talk for 5 minutes about their activities with the aim of helping, intriguing and inspiring us to get through the tough times ahead.So far we have signed up to speak:Ealing Freecycle - where you can give and get all manner of recycled goods from washing machines and bricks to toys and baby clothesEaling Transition - a group focused on the effects on our lives of climate change and peak oil. They have set up a community garden in Acton, give advice on growing to new allotment holders and much moreWinter Night Shelter project - a new project set up by local churches, including St James, to help homeless people over the winterEaling Cycling Campaign - help and advice on getting cyclingCultivate London - a brand new initiative from our local charity, Ealing and Brentford Consolidated Charity, which aims to take on derelict land and convert it into high yield herb farms to generate jobs and training in practical horticulture for disadvantaged young people. They are looking for volunteer mentors to work for a minimum of two hours a month to share gardening knowledge and work experience. Ealing LETS - the Local Exchange Trading Scheme - a way for people to exchange their time and skills using a local currency and help create an 'alternative' local economy based on need.

Fly-tipping of pub-type waste in South Ealing

Over the last 2-3 weeks I have found on 3 occasions many clear plastic bin sacks of empty bottles, cans, pizza boxes and similar dumped outside my flats.Have observed the same outside Maytree Gardens, Gerrards Court (on one occasion a pile of at least 20 bags here) and Nickelby House.They're generally put in a pile, so not chucked from a passing van, and generally in/near the bin area.Generally 4-6 bags.Perhaps intended to be a nuicance, but just bearable (it isn't). So I imaging it will continue.It's a 'crime' that is not a crime if done on private property (is that unique?), so pointless telling Council or Police.Any comments or suggestions?

Deal or No Deal

Talk about Charging people for treatment of Obesity ,For lung related problems to  patients arriving at A&E, is now a hot topic among local communities.Isn't it possible this will soon be applied to A&E patients arriving for treatment for Adventure Sports accidents.? I am thinking here about injuries from Skateboarding, Hill Climbing. Boxing ,SwordFencing,Scuba Diving,Rugby,Football,Hockey,MotorRacing and many more such activities .The arguements for bringing this in will also be applied to these Adventure activities.I hope this is widely discussed before such a deal can be thrust upon us in a hurry.My first impression on the subject is that it is a KILL-JOY method to do what is a money Saving scheme. There are other ways surely.
