The Secret Millionaire Channel 4 tonight
This programme was about the secret millionaire spending about 9 days in Salford under cover to see whether he would be able to help some of the residents who live there.It is hard to imagine how some of these people manage to live in a place where so many properties have been boarded up and neglected and which the council are planning to demolish the remaining homes. Despite protests from the residents the council seems to have the upper hand and will win the battle breaking up communities in the process.It is so sad to see how some people struggle and yet it is encouraging to see how they manage to support one another and try to keep their community alive as best they can without any help from their local authority.We then see how the millionaire gentleman is welcomed by the people of Salford and during the short time he spends with them has to decide how best he can come to their aid to help repair their hall, provide a new kitchen and vegetable garden and so on. All very heartening I am sure. In this area they were unable to purchase fresh vegetables believe it or not!Now my question is, why does it take a millionaire with a kind heart to give some help to this community? What help is the government giving to these people? Who is their local MP and why are they left to fend for themselves? The Labour Party was once considered to be there to help the poor!I would seem that help in this country is offered to many who come to these shores but the people born and bred here would appear to be somewhere at the very back of the queue. Compare this story to that of the family in Acton who were were offered a posh house with over £1,000,000 with all mod cons into the bargain. One family in Salford had no central heating, the wife suffers from asthma and damp coming from the empty properties on either side were making the situation worse. Fortunately the millionaire in the programme put central heatng in for this family but they still live in fear that their home will be demolished and that they will not get market value for the property.It surely is an unfair world we live in.
