Energy conservation

While trolling through the BBC website I came across a couple of interesting articles about energy. The dream of the fifties, free electricity?Probably not, but is there a energy revolution just round the corner?

Front Page of Around Ealing

I am pleased and delighted that Council Tax won't be rising this year and our Council does deserve a pat on the back for achieving this feat. However trumpeting the news on the front page of the Council magazine does seem to cross the line between keeping residents informed and propaganda. The tax freeze is good news but if it is going to be highlighted in this way the money should come from Tory party funds not my pocket.

Can you help Ealing children learn to cook?

The children and families from St. Saviour's and Christ Church Schools are producing a high quality cookbook called 'Big Bites, Little Bites, based on recipes for good healthy food for kids. We are asking local businesses, especially food and restaurant businesses to advertise in the book, which will help with the printing costs.  The cost of advertising isn't high and the book will be sold to families all over Ealing and beyond.The book will be the beginning of a Healthy Eating campaign that we are hoping to establish within both schools, to include a launch the week of May 18th, the establishment of a cookery club for children and other events focussed on healthy eating. What has happened to gentle Ealing?

I treasured this forum for its charm and inconsequental but friendly banter - it used to be the really good-natured forum.It now seems swamped by aggressive polemicists and racists and is no fun any more. And there are far too many people noisily posting stuff that makes me think I just wouldn't want to spend much time with them.What has happened to the old guard? Have they all retreated to somewhere more congenial and, if so, could they tell me where. Please.

Mass Debaters

There was a time when I enjoyed reading discussions on this forum about local topics that were conducted in a civilised way. These days the forum is dominated by a number of people who are often rude, bigotted and interested only in their own opinion. I think it is fair to describe these people as "mass debaters".Could I suggest these mass debaters go & spread their unpleasant seed elsewhere?

Water meters - what do they monitor?

Water meters for all suggests the government.On the spurious grounds of pay for what you use and conservation of supply the government is introducing a subtle method of measuring household occupancy, is it not?On the basis of consumption a television, for example, uses the same amount of electricity whether it is watched by nobody or ten people.Water is different. It is rather more personal. We may well share bath water. But drinking it, whether as tap water or in coffee is something else. I am sure I am not the only one on this forum who doesn't drink water that has passed through a family member or pet, filtered or otherwise!Water consumption is reasonably closely matched to population. More people, more water used.Food for thought. Well, sort of.BTW I have a water meter and our bills are much lower since it was fitted.

This preacher of hate is being probed by cops after  demanding gays are stoned to death. If  proven guilty, put him on the first plane out of the country, otherwise we will be paying millions again in legal aid, and endless appeals....Before the usual abusive remarks appear, remember what this excuse for a human being is suggesting......stoning to death for being gay. In response to my thread “House to let” I have reproduced some of the replies to this matter which many on here, including you want to suppress So you see young man many people are none too happy with the way their money is being doled out to everyone, except as one person said at the expense of those on the housing list........But I forgot, you are housed aren't you? I said;“I have a nice 7 bedroom house, 2 reception rooms 2 kitchens and a lovely 100 ft garden. Property located in the leafy suburbs of Acton. Rent £12,458 per calendar month. No time wasters need apply!!”RepliesWords fail me!  LBC and Talksport radio have had people phoning in for the past two days criticising Ealing Council for wasting OUR money like this.  People who have been on the housing list for years continue to suffer.  Wake up Ealing Council, you are putting the backs up of all those that voted for you. I agree - the problem is that no-one wants to address this issue for the fear of being branded as intolerant and unsympathetic to those in need. It makes a mockery of a well intended scheme to have idiots like those that currently manage these welfare schemes make such a monumental mistake (more harsh words could be appropriate).I wish I could afford to live in a 7 bed house but as a working, tax paying middle class person of moderate means there is no way I can do. Makes you wonder what's the point ! My thoughts are the same as Mark Dudley, I am glad my future is behind me-I have watched this country crumble into the mess it is today-this government has let this country be turned into a scroungers paradise and at the same time kicked the genuine pensioners in the teeth with their stupid rules and regulations,-I pity the young British citizens in facing the future

Policeman sacked for bing a BNP member

I am puzzled about the action of the Merseyside police,when they apparently can ban someond from belonging to the BNP. This rganosation, and npmatter how odious yiou consider them to be, they are not a proscribed organisation, and are allowed to stand in democratic elections.As I understand the law,any person or organisation preaching racial, religious, hatred, can face prosecution, leading to imprisonment, and either they have not been prosecuted in a court of law, or the government have not got the balls to act  against them.Why can't the New Labour Party under Tony Blair be a banned organisation, along with the BNP, after all he (Tony Blair) took this country to an illegal war in Iraq by lying about WMD's, where many of our sevice people were killed, along with thousands more men women and children who were also killed by us.If you propose to answer or criticise this post, forget the racist inuendo I have heard it all before, and NO I do Not support or belong to the BNP. I just think that a police officer who had a hitherto unblemished record, can be sacked for belonging to a legal organisation. Who knows what will be the next party to be banned. IMO this sacking is a dangerous path to be going down, and how will any tribunal uphold the decision, if as I have said, he belonged to a legal party who stand in democratic elections. I think that if he had demonstrated by his actions, that he has treated ethnic minorites more robustly or inappropriately than others, surely this would have been picked up by his senior officers, or his collegues even, they also have reams of paperwork to fill in to justify any action he takes. Along with this, there is always a complaints procedure. One man has just been awarded £60,000 for alleged racial abuse and injuries sustained while in custody.

Resurrection of terrorism in Northern Ireland

Why do you think it has happened? Do they simply miss the 'excitement' and 'glamour' of terror? Are their lives now empty without somethng to hate and fight against? Has there been an upsurge in 'ordinary' crime, i.e. theft, burglary, etc since peace prevailed?

Council Web Site Adverising

I visit the Council's web site every day - looking for news. As an exercise it never takes me that long...But today we have a huge banner advertisement on the home page fanfaring 'COUNCIL TAX FROZEN 0%'.This is completely imapproriate. The Council's web site is a public information vehicle. It's not a vehicle for the controlling political party to run electioneering advertisements.The Council's web site should be telling us things we want to know about as editorial not 'selling' us things we already know about as advertising.What about some home page news on Arcadia, Dickens Yard, Ealing Broadway Crossrail, rebuilding the central Ealing cinema, Ealing Broadway Centre developments, the Local Development Framework, Green Man Lane Estate/ Southall Gas Works/South Acton Estate re-developements, the £2million lost/recovered(?) in Iceland, the Council's trip to Cannes, and the status of the successful Heritage Quarter antique re-lighting project?

Amateur Theatre company in Ealing needs Head of Wardrobe for forthcoming production of Hello Dolly in May 2009.
