What's wrong with expanding Heathrow Airport?
It's an inconvenient fact that Heathrow Airport is where it is. Possibly it should never have been allowed to develop in the the 1940s and 1950s.But it has. It can't be disinvented any more than Bristol which inconveniently places Ealing on the railway line between itself and London.Heathrow brings prosperity to London, both by the passengers (customers?) going through it and the local staff it employs. I suspect a substantial amount of the money spent in Ealing is derived from the airport. If expansion is required to maintain London's place in the modern world then so be it. After all the railway was doubled in size (2 tracks to 4).The argument about CO2 emissions is specious - it's not CO2 that's causing global warming, it's heat from burning fuel in cookers, boilers, car engines, or heat from nuclear power stations. 99% of the electricity we use ends up as heat. The rest is light.Modern technology is reducing atmospheric pollution and noise pollution. Some whinge on about the lack quality of shops in Ealing, but there isn't sufficient demand for quality shops.Without a viable airport there won't be sufficient demand for London, let alone Ealing.Discuss.
