Craven Road

I may have posted on this a while ago so apologies but I just wanted to say that Craven Road is almost opposite the Police Station in Ealing. It seems to be the only road that joins the Uxbridge Road without yellow lines. Up until two years ago there were yellow lines but one day they had mysteriously disappeared. I have spoken to some idiot at the council who doesn't know why this has happened and hasn't the intelligence to find out and give me a sensible answer. I'm hoping someone on this forum may know.I have asked the council to investigate and reinstate them but this hasn't happened (after two-and-a-half years). There is a good reason for reinstating the lines. First the road now has cars parked on either side which makes it only wide enough for a single car to drive down at a time. The refuse truck cannot back up into the Ealing Gateway building car park because of the narrowness and a fire truck would also suffer the same problem.Because cars turning from the Uxbridge Road onto Craven Road very often are blocked before completing their turn this poses a danger. It's unbelievable but cars can park right up to the very edge of the Uxbridge Road with impunity. Please illuminate why this running sore is allowed to continue because no one has so far been able to provide a satisfactory answer.

Gritted pavements in Ealing - February 2009

This is rather a long shot but a friend of mine fell over on the ungritted, icy pavement outside The Town House in February last year.  She broke her wrist and is suing Ealing Council for loss of earnings.The Council insist that the pavement was gritted and that they have records to prove it but they have yet to provide the records in question.I know this is a year ago but is there anyone else who was around The Town House on the first morning of heavy snow (sorry, will get exact date from my friend) and who saw the state of the pavement on the corner at about 8.30am ?  My friend was taken to Ealing Hospital and met a couple of other people who had fallen over in the same place.  She later went back to the area with her partner to take photographs but by then it was too late by then - the Council had gritted.Any help would be appreciated.

where can I buy wooden logs for a fireplace?

These are purely for decoration they will never be lit (well not itentionally). I want them so the oblique / round end is on show. Not something I especially like but I can't think what else to do - apart fro embroider a fire screen!

Ealing Police Boss to Move On

Press reports suggest that Ealing's Police boss Sultan Taylor is moving on after just two years in the job. I seem to rememeber that his predecessor Collette Paul only stayed in the post for a couple of years also.Do we think this is healthy having Police bosses running our town for just a couple of years? Also why do they stay in the job for such a short time? Finally, to whom is Ealing's Police boss accountable to?

Cleaner needed

I am moving this Saturday and need to get my flat "professionally cleaned". I don't think I require a steam cleaning etc service though and a regular cleaner will suffice. Can anyone recommend one to me?

Tesco direct  - NOT recommended!

I too had problems with Tesco direct (just read an earlier post) and will never darken their door again. I ordered a TV online, made payment; delivery arranged for 2 days' hence. Waited in all day (they only give a day, not am/pm). They phoned me at 7.20pm on delivery day (20 minutes after their 'day' had finished) to tell me the item was out of stock and they would refund my money. I'd been trying to ring them but the line was continually engaged.I was furious having spent the whole day at home but their argument was 'you're getting a refund, what's the problem?'. I emailed customer services who were really not interested and sent their stock 'pacifying' response.I don't understand why the stock system of a major retailer didn't just say 'sold out' rather than allow me to order. Got a nice TV from Curry's a day later. Two friends now also have the same TV from Curry's (which means tesco missed out on at least three sales in my small circle of friends). Good. No more than they deserve. Price isn't everything.

Plus 0702 is not the dialing code for Aberdeen.I went to google - entereed Aikeen Offshore scam - and hey presto! Yes, it's a scam. They hook the restaurant by tempting them with 15 people on 3 consecutive nights at a  early time.  Next, they send another email. A New York restaurant said =''Apparently, he was going to give me a $3,000 deposit on his credit card, then book a car service to bring his hungry oil workers to dinner. But the car service’s credit card machine was bad, and they couldn’t take his card. And, as he reminded me, “…am on the high sea work on an OIL RIG. There are no bank or western union here.” So I was to get his credit card, charge it for $9,000, then keep $3,000 and give the remaining $6,000 to the car service''Beware!!

Looking for a lodger? Classical musician needs new home.

Hi, I have been renting in Northfields for the past 18 months. My landlady is selling our lovely rented house and I need to find somewhere nice for myself and my piano (upright) to live in the Ealing area as soon as I can!Ideally I'd like to be in a shared house, perhaps in a large family house with granny flat/annexe/converted basement so that I don't disturb anyone. Well done to Harrow for providing the first state-funded Hindu School in Britain. It's not before time - after all, there are nearly 1m Hindus living in this country, most of them law-abiding tax-paying citizens, and they are almost certainly net contributors to our economy.The UK has thousands of state-funded Christian denominational schools, so it is only fair that other faiths should be accorded the same privilege.Some interesting facts about this new school:-It has a strictly vegetarian diet for school dinners;It abides by the National Curriculum;It has regular yoga sessions;It is already five times over-subscribed;Its intake includes a number of pupils who are not of the Hindu faith;It has already won plaudits for its environmental credentials.The largest minority ethnic group in Harrow are the Gujaratis (most of whom are Hindu) but the borough also benefitted from being the 2nd largest recipient of the Ugandan Asians (after Leicester), whose passage of entry into the UK was granted by the late Sir Edward Heath - in the teeth of opposition from the odious Enoch Powell. 'Aid For Haiti' Descendants and Acton groups and residents come together.

Aid For Haiti which will be held on Saturday 30th January 2010.  It is free to attend, we will be selling unwanted gifts and other items.  Food will be on sale, we will have performances from the community... All proceeds from the event will be sent to Haiti.  We have already Collected £119.64 pence, from our stall in Acton Market last Saturday which is a good amount as the weather was very poor.  We are doing it again this Saturday, and we intend to make at least double the amount of money for Haiti. If you can support us in anyway, it would be great to see you, this is a very worthy cause.  I guess many of you have already donated, but if you can spare your time please come along.  We are being supported by local schools, the local police, Priory community Centre, and most importantly, local people. Why exactly is Ealing such a popular place to live?

My partner and I are trying to decide whether we buy our new house in Ealing, after having lived here for over 6 years now, and to be honest, we are struggling to come up with many reasons bar the excellent transport links. For such a large town, it is bereft of many things you would expect to find - no swimming pool, no leisure centre, no department store, very few quality restaurants, poor shopping generally, no "proper" theatre, terribly run down hospital, no cinema at the moment, no real live music venue - not even a half decent football team!Richmond really puts Ealing to shame on facilities. I know that most of the things I have listed can be accessed in neighbouring towns but that is not the point is it?Why do Ealing council seem hell bent on building even more flats to encourage even more people to Ealing when there is so little to do here and so few facilities?  So, do we buy in Ealing or look in Richmond, Fulham, or somewhere else?

Misleading Adverts by Supermarkets???

Why do supermarkets advertise a 'Special Offer' when it is obviously not available instore?This has happened on a number of occasions, the stores get away with it by mentioning in very small print 'subject to availability' at the bottom of the advert!Yesterday my husband and I went to Asda, North Acton, after reading an advert in the Daily Mail regarding 'Fusion Blades - 4 for £5.00' of course when you get to the checkout they know nothing of the advert and the item comes up at the normal price!Recently we went to Lidl to get ink for the computer, again on a special offer. They didn't even have the item in any of their stores because a friend went around to different branches to check.I think these stores just print adverts to get people into their stores hoping they will spend money on other items.  Perhaps the staff get first choice when special offers come in so the customer has no chance!I seem to remember that Morrisons were doing the same thing and when forum members went to the store there were no such offers available!
